If you find yourself displaying any of these symptoms, read on to learn how you can deal with caregiver stress syndrome.

Caregivers' Strategies for Coping with Caregiver Stress Syndrome

Once you've identified the symptoms of caregiver stress syndrome, the following step is to deal with it. This illness is not uncommon; the key is to prioritize your own health so that you can continue to care for your loved one.

If you have caregiver stress syndrome, one of the first things you can and should do is take a break. While you may assume you can handle everything on your own, the truth is that no one can. Set up some respite care with local agencies, family members, friends, or support groups. Depending on your situation, this might be a home health nurse, a personal care assistant, or an adult day program. You might even locate someone in your region who is also a caregiver and is prepared to care for you for a few hours in exchange for you doing the same for him or her. Use your workout time to take care of yourself, no matter what you do. Do something fun, or simply rest and refresh.

Concentrate on taking care of yourself. Make appointments with your own healthcare professionals. This may include seeing your health care physician, specialists, a therapist or counselor, or practitioners of alternative medicine. You will be unable to care for your loved one if you are not in good health. Make sure you're eating well, getting enough sleep, and drinking plenty of water. Make time to exercise every day, even if it's as simple as going for a 15-minute walk around the neighborhood.
